The Shorin Ryu Okinawan Question and Answer book is also a great resource for language.  Ask me about it in classes.

Language Resource

I like this web page.  The focus leans toward Japanese Karate, not Okinawan, but still some interesting articles. The Language resource may be helpful for all of us in moving our dojo Japanese forward and becoming the best we can at the Japanese language we use in our dojo.

Rank Advancement and testing Fall 2010

Becoming a Black Belt may be in the minds of many of the students beginning karate at Cedar Hills and Conestoga recreation centers. In our culture it is easy to see any “sport” as competition and to imagine climbing through the ranks to achieve success.
I believe that traditional Karate is different. The competition and challenges are within the student themselves. Traditionally, the student advances at their own pace without concern for how quickly someone else may achieve rank and only nominal concern about their own rank.

To be able to learn karate and advance through the ranks, students have to ask themselves several questions:

  • Am I willing to continue to show up for classes?

  • Am I willing to practice each day?

  • Am I willing to be corrected to get the technique right by my Sensei’s?

  • Am I willing to learn to work together with others?

  • And, sometimes, am I willing to learn other, more difficult questions about life, and time, and choices?

The lessons and the learning are different for each student. I have known many individuals who are brown belts in several styles, but have not stuck with the training long enough to be a black belt. That all being said, please remember, this is my opinion.

We will be testing for rank on December 4. Those testing for any white belt rank will pay $35, those testing for any green belt rank will pay $45, and those testing for any brown belt rank will pay $55. The test will be at Ito Dojo 9950 SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy., Beaverton, OR 97005 . All white belts will test @ 10:15, upper ranks at 11:30.

Please fill out the following information and return to us with the test fee prior to November 24. Students may test and advance for up to 2 ranks at any one time. Ask us if you have any questions. The next test will be in March of 2011.
